Puff Pastry Pizza

I’m a super busy mom to 3 little kids. I am always trying to make holidays more fun and unique and hit the jackpot with this very easy Puff Pastry Pizza.

It can be so hard to find holiday activities that don’t end up with a completely messy house from all the fun. Or a holiday themed food that doesn’t require random ingredients or kitchen tools that I need to buy. Or recipes that take so, so long to make. So this year I set out to make a fun, simple, and easy Valentine’s dinner or snack that you can make with your kids.

The result: Puff Pastry Pizza!

I love to get my kids involved in the kitchen. I basically live in my kitchen so anytime I invite them to help on a recipe they love it. Puff Pastry Pizza is a recipe that your kids of all ages can basically do all on their own aside from putting the tray in the oven and taking it out.

Puff Pastry Pizza is easily customizable with what toppings your kids like most, doesn’t dirty many dishes, can become a fun holiday tradition, and is inexpensive to make. All the wins in my book.

Because I created this recipe with my kids I thought it would be fun to get their little hands involed in the pictures too. I think I’ll look back on this post a decade from now and cry over how tiny their little hands are at 3, 6, and 8 years old.

If you make these with your kids please let me know how much fun you all had!!

A few years ago I made these cute thumb print heart cookies while are another easy and quick Valentine’s Day treat that’s super fun to make with your kids!

Puff Pastry Pizza

Heart-Shaped Puff Pastry Pizzas are a fun and easy twist on traditional pizza. Perfect for a quick snack or a fun Valentine’s Day dinner to make with your kids, regardless of age.

With a crisp puff pastry base, topped with pizza sauce, mozzarella, and mini pepperonis, these bite-sized treats are ready in just half an hour!

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: about 6-8 pizzas per puff pastry sheet 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

Heart-shaped cookie cutter

½ cup pizza sauce

1 cup shredded mozzarella

½ cup mini pepperoni pizzas

Any other pizza toppings

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Roll out the puff pastry so it’s flat. Use a 4-5-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter and cut into as many pieces as you can and place on a baking sheet.

Pierce each heart with a fork about 5-6 times a piece. Bake plain for 12 minutes and remove from oven.

Spread about 1-2 teaspoons of pizza sauce on each heart followed by a tablespoon or so of mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle a few mini pepperonis on top and return to oven for an additional 8-12 minutes until cheese is melty and pastry is cooked through.

Remove from oven and serve hot.

Notes

Step-by-step pictures and Frequently Asked Questions below recipe card.

Freshly shred your own mozzarella cheese for best results. Pre-shredded doesn’t melt as nicely.

Don’t over top your pizzas or you run the risk of the pizzas ending up soggy or toppings sliding off.

Prick each pastry dough piece all the way through to the pan or it will get too poofy in the oven.

If you use any pizza toppings high in moisture, blot them off with a paper towel before topping pizzas.

Frequently Asked Questions – Puff Pastry Pizza

There's a few things that could have happened:
  1. You didn't par-bake your puff pastry before adding the toppings.
  2. You used too much sauce.
  3. You used wet toppings (like pineapple) and didn't dry them.
If you don't roll out your puffed pastry it will puff up more. Also, when you prick the dough with a fork make sure to poke it all the way through the pastry. This will help the pastry not puff up so much when you bake it.
If you don't have a heart-shaped cookie cutter, or one that is not the right size then you can use another shape. Or you can just cut the puffed pastry sheet into squares, usually 6-8 depending on the pizza size you want.
