Looking for a dip that’ll steal the show at your next party, gathering, or movie night? This Homemade French Onion Dip is exactly what you need—a creamy, savory, and totally irresistible dip that combines the rich flavor of caramelized onions with a tangy and creamy base. Whether you’re serving it at a holiday get-together or simply enjoying it as a snack, this homemade french onion dip is perfect for every occasion and will have everyone coming back for more!

Why is This French Onion Dip Special?

This isn’t your typical French onion dip that comes from a store-bought packet. It’s made from scratch, with real caramelized onions, which bring out a deep, sweet flavor that you just can’t get from powdered mixes.

This Homemade French Onion Dip gets better the longer it sits, making it ideal for preparing ahead of time. You’ll be amazed at how easily these simple ingredients come together to create a rich, flavorful dip that everyone will love.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

This recipe uses a handful of simple ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Butter – To cook the onions to golden, sweet perfection. Plus, everything with butter tastes better, right?
  • Onions – Three medium white or yellow onions, finely diced and caramelized to bring out their natural sweetness. I know 3 onions might sound like a lot but onions shrink down so much when they are caramelized.
  • Sour Cream & Mayo – These two ingredients make up the creamy base of the dip.
  • Cream Cheese – Softened to add a velvety texture to the dip.
  • Chives, Parsley, and Spices – For flavoring the dip and giving it freshness.
  • Worcestershire Sauce & Beef Better Than Bouillon – These are the secret ingredients that bring the dip to life, adding savory depth and richness.

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes active
  • Cook Time: 35 minutes
  • Total Time: 50 minutes active, plus refrigeration time
  • Yield: makes about 2 1/2 cups of dip 1x

Ingredients

Scale

3 tablespoons butter

3 medium white or yellow onions, diced

1 ½ cups sour cream

½ cup mayo

2 oz cream cheese, very soft

1 tablespoon fresh or freeze-dried chives

1 teaspoon dried parsley (or 1 tablespoon fresh)

¼ teaspoon kosher salt (or 1/8 teaspoon table salt)

¼ teaspoon pepper

¼ teaspoon onion powder

1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1 ½ teaspoons beef Better than Bouillon Concentrate

Instructions

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat

Add the onions and cook until they are caramelized and golden brown. This should take about 35 minutes. Stir every few minutes. If your onions start to stick to the pan, you can add about a tablespoon of water, as needed.

While your onions are cooking. Whisk together the sour cream, mayo, cream cheese, chives, parsley, salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder.

Once your onions are done cooking, let them cool to room temperature.

Mix in your onions followed by the Worcestershire sauce and Better Than Bouillon.

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving in an airtight container.

For best results and flavor, refrigerate 24 hours before serving.

For best results and flavor, refrigerate 24 hours before serving.

If you are using a non-stick pan, you will likely not need any water while cooking the onions. If you are using any kind of pan but non-stick you are more likely to need to add water while cooking the onions.

Your cream cheese will be hard to mix together unless it is completely room temperature. If needed, you can soften it a bit in the microwave for about 15 seconds.

You can speed up the cooling time of the onions by placing them in a bowl and refrigerating them for 10-15 minutes.

Store in an airtight container for up to about 5-7 days.

I like adding the Worcestershire sauce and Better Than Bouillon at the end because it seems to help the onions squish and release more flavor as you mix them more.

Frequently Asked Questions – Homemade French Onion Dip

Both yellow and white onions work well for caramelizing. Yellow onions tend to have a slightly sweeter flavor, which is perfect for this dip, but white onions will also give you a mild sweetness once caramelized.
Absolutely! In fact, it’s highly recommended to make it at least 24 hours in advance. Allowing the dip to chill and the flavors to meld overnight will result in a richer, more flavorful dip.
Yes! If you're looking for a vegetarian version or just don’t have Beef Better Than Bouillon, you can substitute it with vegetable bouillon, or even a little bit of soy sauce for that savory umami kick. The beef Bouillon will help give it the color in the pictures though.
You can substitute lower-fat versions of the mayo, sour cream, and cream cheese, but keep in mind that the dip might not be as rich and creamy as the original version. For the best texture and flavor, I recommend using full-fat versions.
While classic potato chips are always a hit, this dip pairs wonderfully with pita chips, and fresh veggie sticks (like carrots, cucumbers, and bell peppers).
Caramelizing the onions takes about 35-40 minutes over medium-low heat. The key is to cook them slowly, stirring occasionally, until they become soft, golden, and sweet. Don’t rush this step—it’s worth the wait!
