Chinese Take Out Sesame Chicken

I’ve been making this Chinese take out sesame chicken recipe to perfect it for about a year. It’s delicious and perfect and just as good as take out sesame chicken. Sesame chicken is my favorite Chinese dish in Chinese restaurants in America, But in Finland, Chinese restaurants don’t even serve it. So That’s what spurred me learning to make it on my own. It’s lightly breaded and has the most perfectly flavored sauce. The best part is that it doesn’t take as long as you’d expect this type of thing to take.

Also, this is random, but in Finland, no one calls it take out. They call it “take away”. If you say take out literally no one at any restaurant knows what you’re talking about. You can add that to your random knowledge part of your brain. You’re welcome.

Chinese Take Out Sesame Chicken

This perfected Chinese take out sesame chicken is lightly breaded with a sticky sauce that is perfectly flavored. It doesn’t even take too long to make!

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes
  • Cook Time: 30 minutes
  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: serves 5-6 1x

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken-

1 1/2 pounds chicken breasts, cut into 11 1/2 inch pieces

1/2 cup corn starch

3 eggs, lightly beaten

1 1/4 cup flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon pepper

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tablespoon paprika

About 2/3 cup oil, for frying

Sauce-

2 tablespoons sesame oil

4 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons rice vinegar

1/4 cup honey

1/4 cup sweet chili sauce

6 tablespoons ketchup

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup soy sauce

23 tablespoons sesame seeds

1 green onion, chopped

Serve with Steamed rice, if desired

Instructions

In a small bowl add the corn starch. In another bowl add the eggs. In a final bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

In a small mixing bowl combine the sesame oil, garlic, rice vinegar, honey, sweet chili sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, and soy sauce.  Set aside.

Dip each piece of chicken first in the corn starch. Then dip each piece fully into the egg and finally into the flour mixture. Place on a clean plate and heat oil in a large skillet over slightly above medium heat till hot. Cook half the chicken at a time, turning a few times while it cooks till chicken is crispy and cooked through. Remove to a paper towel lined plate.

If your oil is low add a bit more in and heat again. If there are too many bits in the oil that look like they may burn if you continue cooking the second batch in it, drain oil and scrape out the bits and start over with fresh oil. Cook the second batch and remove to the paper towel lined plate.

Remove any oil from the skillet and pour in the sauce mixture. Increase heat a bit and let the sauce simmer for 4-5 minutes, whisking frequently till it reduces by at least a third and starts to look a bit sticky. Gently fold in the chicken till the sauce covers it evenly. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions and serve with rice, if desired.

This chicken was so good! I love making Chinese food and this will definitely be added to our list of favorites. The chicken was crispy and the sauce was delicious. I made this when we had guests for dinner. Normally I like to try meals before making them for others, but when it’s a Cup of Cream recipe I can trust it to be delicious!
